I will be honest, I always liked the concept behind Fiverr.com.
Only a few clicks and a customer can place an order with a freelancer based on a specific set of deliverables.
Sure, however, it comes at a price tag. A huge one.
This is one the few freelance platforms in which buyers are given free reign to abuse, sabotage and outright blackmail vendors any way that they like.
In this informative article, I want to share a recent bad experience for a vendor on Fiverr, and also I chose to give up on the platform altogether.
How A Normal Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
While I have been employing Fiverr myself (off and on ) for a while, this particular encounter relates to my girlfriend's account, not my own.
(I have been advising her on building a respectable account, and the way to go beyond and above every last order. Everything stated is that her doing, I am just an observer.)
In cases like this, she had only gotten another $5 sequence on learn this here now her logo gig, which appeared to be like another... or so we believed.
The order was fulfilled in great time, and my girlfriend had even included a bonus emblem concept as well as the source file (that is usually a part of the pricier package).
The client"loved" one of those concepts so we proceeded to deliver her the appropriates file sizes, as mentioned in the final description.
The customer came back asking for a social media kit to decide on the emblem, something which is clearly not available as part of her or his gig.
Against my advice, my girlfriend chose to deliver the further job, despite not getting paid any extra for it.
Following that, the customer responded with much more demands and a few changes to the social networking files.
At this point, she concurred enough was enough.
Despite every effort to please this individual, they have been clearly overstepping their bounds here.
That is when the customer went from simply overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of carrying my girlfriend's Fiverr reputation hostage.)
While she took some time to ponder a response and reach out to Fiverr service for help, the customer did finally go ahead and render a 1 star review.
Presumably this was to show her he/she was Fiverr Reviews G2 Crowd not kidding.
Shortly after, while waiting on Fiverr's answer to the support question, the client paid an additional $10 for the social networking kit.
Needless to say, the payment has been accompanied by yet another threat.
At this point, all I wished to do was move all Liam Neeson and search this individual down so I could punch them in the face.
However, in the time, I had hope that Fiverr support would step in and rescue my girlfriend out of that PITA client.
When the answer came from Fiverr support, they told that they couldn't Working as a Freelancer at Fiverr: Employee Reviews Indeed.com force the purchaser to accept the purchase.
Okay, that's fair enough. (though the buyer already accepted it, technically.)
They also suggested drawing up a list for the purchaser to demonstrate the job was done in accordance to the gig prerequisites.
Frankly, this reply just didn't cut the mustard.
My girlfriend communicated in her initial email that the customer was trying to extort her for free work out the agreed periods, by making a negative inspection if she didn't comply.
Of course, it was not really about the work, it was all about seeking protection in an abusive customer who was intentionally pushing his luck.
Their answer didn't offer us some assurance that Fiverr really understood that, and even in this stage we felt as though they did not wish to get involved.
At exactly the same time, she also responded to the buyers latest danger, explaining that she would not continue to work together unless the comments has been changed/removed.
(Again, this will be comments which was obviously and intentionally made to intimidate her to providing function outside the agreed terms.)
An honest request by anyones standards, right?
Rather than acknowledge what the buyer had completed until this point, Fiverr instantly turned the tables in my girlfriend.
Turns out, she had been the one breaking all of the rules.
Since she had asked the customer to change their opinions, she was no more entitled to some help from Fiverr assistance.
It is possible to imagine how we felt reading this.
What the purchaser had done and said before her very last message has been now being swept under the rug -- as if never happened in any way.
Fiverr essentially decided to encourage a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend using a permanent stain in an accounts she'd worked so difficult to build up.
If everything that happened wasn't upsetting enough, it's knowing that this man or woman is still running rampant on Fiverr, preying on defensless vendors without a sprinkling of repercussion.
And believe me, there are tons of buyers doing exactly this on Fiverr, knowing they could and will get away with it.
Well, as most this was happening, I did some investigating to determine whether some other vendors went through a similar ordeal with a purchaser.
Very quickly, I discovered a variety of almost equal cases on the Fiverr forum outdated years ago. (that's right, decades.)
This is obviously something which's been going on for quite a while and it stems from giving buyers also much power over sellers.
If there's 1 thing I have learned about Fiverr, it's that customers are ALWAYS more valued than freelancers.
Doesn't matter how much time that you put into a project, or just how hard you've worked on it, or maybe how long you managed communication in a dispute, even as it really comes down to it... freelancers have little to no protection.
Even when it is a very clear cut case in your favour, there is still every chance the client will come out at the top. All it takes it one tiny thing you"did wrong" according to their conditions of support and EVERYTHING else is ignored
Taking a look at the evidence, it's clear to me that Fiverr is well aware of what is going on, yet remains prepared to settle back and let it happen.
A Final Message To Fiverr. If you're a decision maker at Fiverr and you are reading this, I implore you to seriously reconsider your present support processes for freelancers.
It is not right that somebody can put all that time and effort in establishing an account and over-delivering at every conceivable chance, only to be shot down by the very people that you rely on to safeguard you.
Look, I really don't wish to abandon Fiverr. I really don't want to be telling folks to avoid your own platform.
But after everything that's occurred, you haven't left me any choice.
Until something is done in order to guard freelancers from using this sort of abuse, I'll continue to propagate this article and do anything I can to stop others from falling victim to a one-sided support staff.
The second you really do something about this and also provide freelancers a means to fight , I'll be more than happy to update the article.
